Yes, weight loss food for dogs can be perfect for senior dogs, particularly those struggling with their weight. Senior dogs are prone to obesity, thanks to the natural slowing of their metabolism. If your senior dog seems to be getting a little round in the middle, feeding them dog food suitable for weight loss can help them get trim and achieve a healthier weight.
No, simply reducing your dog's portion size is not enough to help them lose weight. By restricting their food, they miss out on the right amount of vitamins, minerals, and nutrients they need to stay healthy, and it can leave them hungrier than usual.
This may lead to more begging and hunting for scraps, which could completely disrupt their weight loss journey. Instead, focus on dog food specifically formulated for weight loss, and finding the healthy amount for your dog's size and breed. Weight loss dog food creates the perfect balance of necessary nutrients and naturally low-calorie ingredients, helping to support their weight loss whilst providing a complete and balanced meal.
Alongside the right food, exercise also plays a huge role in your dog's weight loss. Whether that's keeping on top of walks, playtime in the garden, or just playing with all their toys. Just make sure the level of exercise aligns with their age, joints, health, and ability.
This will always depend on your dog’s age, breed, activity level and health condition, so you should consult a vet for specifics. Just as humans require a lean, structured diet to lose weight, it’s recommended to feed your dog at the same times each day and in measured portion sizes; avoid fatty treats and human table scraps as much as possible, and offer treats in moderation.
Dog food that doesn’t contain grain isn’t automatically better for weight loss, but generally, grain-free dog food (such as the recipes in Pooch & Mutt’s range) replaces grain with nutritious, whole ingredients such as lean proteins, fruit and veggies. As many commercial pet food brands use grain as a ‘filler’, this focus on health and nutrition makes many grain-free foods a better choice for weight loss in dogs.
Our Weight Loss range focuses on low-calorie foods that include lean protein and lots of vegetables to help keep pooches full. This aims to help dogs suffering from obesity to gradually get back to a healthy weight. Our Low Fat range contains our foods that are naturally lower in fat, which may help dogs struggling with their weight to support their weight management and maintain a healthy weight.
The ideal weight for your dog depends on their breed, sex, mix and size. There'll be a healthy average for their breed that you can look up; however, every dog is different, and what's healthy for them may not be healthy for another. The best way to find the healthiest weight for your dog is to ask your vet. They'll be able to take into account not just your dog's breed, but their medical history, and advise you on their ideal weight.
But with every dog being different, paying more attention to their Body Condition Score rather than the number on the scales is a more accurate way to determine if their weight is healthy. For more information, and to find out your dog's Body Condition Score, be sure to speak to your vet.
For dogs prone to weight gain or obesity, our weight loss collection helps keep their weight under control.
Packed with tasty lean proteins like Chicken, gentle fibres that help them feel satisfied (like Sweet Potato and Psyllium Husk), plus added pre- and postbiotics for a gut-health boost, it goes easy on calories but big on flavour.
If you're questioning whether your pooch is overweight or obese, a quick consultation at the vet will definitely help. They'll take into account your dog's size and breed, and compare their weight to the healthy average.
Most vets use physical examinations, feeling their ribs, assessing their overall shape, and checking their results against the Body Condition Score. Dogs of an ideal healthy weight typically score 4 or 5 out of 9.
If you're concerned about their weight and considering taking your dog to the vet , feel free to do a little check yourself.
If you're struggling to feel their ribs with light pressure, you can't make out a typical hourglass shape when looking at your dog from above, their belly is sagging on the floor, or they're constantly low in energy or struggling to move, a visit to the vet could be a good step in the right direction.
We asked Pooch & Mutt Vet, Dr Linda Simon, about her experiences with dog obesity in her clinic. She states:
I'd say the number of overweight dogs that I see in my clinic has remained consistently high. Perhaps about half of the dogs I see are above their ideal Body Condition Score. Unfortunately, I've seen a rise in owners considering dogs who are a bit overweight as being healthy. I believe this is because they're accustomed to seeing overweight or obese dogs, as it's unfortunately become the norm.
Sadly, for dogs, being overweight or obese takes a silent toll on their body, and also has a real impact on their quality of life. It also puts dogs at an increased risk of other medical conditions, like joint disease, heart disease and certain cancers.
When helping owners with overweight or obese dogs, I take them through the Body Condition Score Chart and point out their dog's waist, ribs and abdomen. We also discuss a target weight and have a good chat about exercise, and of course, the right diet and treats!
Our weight loss dog food collection champions lean, quality proteins, slow-burning carbohydrates, and healthy ingredients that are naturally low calorie, making the food itself lower in calories per gram.
This helps support your dog's weight loss with balanced, complete meals, without skipping out on taste.
